Codemasters invites virtual speed demons to take a run around 38 of the most internationally renown race circuits in Pro Race Driver. The game's 42 available automobiles include models by Toyota and Lexus, Daimler Chrysler and Dodge, Chevy, Ford, Mitsubishi, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, and more. Choose a favorite car and track, or enter one of 13 World Championship series, including the TOCA Tour, the Southern and Northern European Challenges, and the American All Stars.

Another usual strength of Codemasters' racing sims is the driver AI. Not here, though, as wacky behavior appears much too frequently, and the computer-controlled cars behave like, well, computer-controlled cars. This is shocking considering how convincing the AI is in TOCA, where it actually felt like you were competing against a group of living, breathing opponents. Much like High Heat 2004, Pro Race Driver also suffers from the fact that its roots are on the console side. When will these game companies understand that it's not acceptable to just port over the same joypad-restricted interface to the mouse-strong PC?

Truth be told, there is plenty to like about Pro Race Driver, not the least of which are the gorgeous visuals. The 42 licensed cars look amazing, and the 38 real-world tracks are a sight to behold. The cutscenes are beautifully rendered, putting this game in the crowded category of "Titles That Look Better Than They Play." Though cars and tracks will be unlocked during the game, there's a huge assortment available right from the get-go, another nice touch. Outside of the career mode, the individual races have plenty of options regarding their customizability.

Multiplayer features are numerous. Unfortunately, the crappy physics modeling makes racing against live opponents only marginally more entertaining than going against the CPU racers. Like any online racing event, you have to deal with a lot of annoying HI (that's Human Intelligence, or lack thereof) and some pretty bad lag reared its head from time to time. The multiplayer features are nice to have, but the meat of this game is definitely its single-player content.

This game relies on the Starforce protection system, which works fine in Windows XP and might work on Windows 7 if you install the SFUPDATE patch before running the game, which you can get from their official site here: -force.com/support/drivers/ (find the link under "2. Versions before 5.5").

5. Download the Starforce removal tool from -force.com/support/drivers/ (find the link under "2. Versions before 5.5"). Run this to ensure Starforce is removed. With any luck (i.e. you didn't run the game yet) then no Starforce drivers will be found!

1. Create a folder on your hard disk to put the game in. For this example I'll use c:\games\tocard12. Inside the c:\games\tocard1 folder, create the following folders and sub-folders (note the 4 sub-folders inside the "sound" folder). We'll be putting files in these in a minute:

c:\games\tocard1\Firstly, in the root tocard1 folder, put the following files from the CD-ROM's "program files\Codemasters\Race Driver" folder:binkw32.dllGameSpyHardwareSetup.exeRaceDriver.exerd.bmpRegistertest.exeAdditionally you can add the readme.txt of the language you prefer from the eng/fre/ger/ita/spa sub-folder on the CD-ROM.

LANGUAGE = could try other values (eng/fre/ger/ita/spa), but not tested this, so it might fail!PATH_MAIN and PATH_APPLICATION = change these to the correct path to where the GameData and game folder are located, if you didn't use the c:\games\tocard1 mentioned originally.PATH_CD = change this to your CD-ROM drive, if it's not the E:\ driveThe other values are specific to the UK verson of ToCA Race Driver, so change them at your own risk!

8. Go into the c:\games\tocard1 folder and double-click HardwareSetup.exe to set up the hardware. Note: with the patch applied, the maximum refresh rate available under "Graphic -> Advanced Settings..." might not be the highest your monitor can take. So once you've applied the settings you with, click "Save and Exit", then open the pchardwareconfig.ini file and change the "FullScreenRefresh=" to the maximum refresh rate you wish to use (on my monitor it would only let me select 120hz in the settings, but I changed this to 144hz in the .ini file, which my monitor can take). Note: with regard to resolution, widescreen resolutions can be set, but the game will be stretched (fat looking images!), so best to run with a 4:3 resolution, as the game was made for that!

Ryan McKane is the name, and driving cars is his game. It's an (oily) rags-to-riches story of the meteoric rise of a lowly test driver to genuine contender. Just how meteoric that rise will prove is down to you as you make a concerted attempt on some of the world's most challenging championships. Numbering 13 in total, these include the traditional British Touring Car Championship (the TOCA tour) as well as a slew of European and American equivalents. What this boils down to is a total of 38 real-life tracks, all recreated using official landscape data. Amongst those you might recognise are Britain's Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington.

To this end. TOCA Race Driver will involve a lot more than simply driving round and round a track in an expensive car. To be fair, that will make up the bulk of the gameplay, but the on-track action is bolstered by a complex storyline intended to provide a compelling incentive to race.

"There are many, many reasons for adding characters and a story into TOCA Race Driver" says Raeburn. "To begin with, most current racing games are not a true reflection of the sport they portray. They treat motor racing as if it were a very dull documentary, where no people are involved at all. and the focus is purely on the cars. The racing itself, of course, is vitally important to a good race game, but motor sport is not just about cars - it's about the people involved as well. Imagine F1 without the likes of Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. We think this is one of the main reasons that F1 games are generally so mind-numbingly dull to play."

"We're not talking about throwing in a few dull cut-scenes that people have no interest in. We're talking about trying to create the complete world of a pro race driver, where everything in the game has a real-world reason for being there, and where all events are directly driven by you. We want the whole game to flow so that you don't notice the story unfolding, just like in Half-Life." Throw in some extremely complicated damage simulation and a host of tracks and cars, and it all sounds very promising. The game has already been something of a hit on the PS2, where it appeared before Christmas, but needless to say we're betting that the PC incarnation is the definitive version. If so, we might even dig out another award.

Storylines In Racing games. There was time when such a thing was a more alien concept than Steve Hill turning down a press trip or Leeds in the Premiership. TOCA Race Driver changed all that - well, the storylines in games bit, anyway. You play as Ryan McKane, a driver keen to make a name for himself in the world of pro touring car racing. What follows is a story-driven campaign in which you get to drive and destroy one of 42 cars on 38 real-life circuits.

To be honest, the story is throwaway, with the game's true beauty lying in its excellent recreation of touring car racing, made all the better by a top-notch physics system that makes each car handle uniquely and degenerate in a variety of debilitating ways. Better still, opponent drivers hold grudges should you shunt or block them off, meaning the experience glows with a genuinely lifelike sheen. Highly recommended then, but if you're running anything under a P41.6GHz, make sure you steer well clear.
